On May 31, 2023, the Bureau of Land Management announced its plan to invest $161 million from the Inflation Reduction Act in 21 ecosystem and habitat restoration projects throughout 11 Western states. The projects, called “Restoration Landscapes,” will restore wildlife habitat and clean water on public lands, strengthening communities and local economies. For example, $7.6 million will fund restoration efforts in New Mexico, focusing on the Lower Pecos Restoration Landscape.
Landscape-scale treatments protect fragile soils, increase native grasses, reverse fragmentation, improve water filtration and groundwater recharge, reduce sediment loads on local bodies of water, and restore habitat for a multitude of species.
