On January 26, 2024, NOAA announced $27 million in IRA funds to recover threatened and endangered Pacific salmon. This section 40004 funding will expand NOAA’s expertise and improve access to resources necessary to advance its science capabilities. The funds will be distributed to NOAA’s Northwest and Southwest Fisheries Science Centers through 2026. The funding will support the science component of the agency’s recovery strategy by making improvements to salmon life-cycle computer models, by assessing habitat restoration effectiveness, investigating the impacts of stormwater pollutants on salmon, and by measuring indicators of ocean productivity and predation rates to improve predictions of salmon survival and growth.
