Type: Implementation of IRA
On September 18, 2023, NOAA announced $82 million in IRA section 40001 funding and annual appropriations to conserve and recover the endangered North Atlantic right whales. This funding will support the application of existing technologies and development and implementation of new technologies to detect large whales and improve understanding of whales’ distribution and habitat use. NOAA’s investments will be in four major areas: monitoring and computer modeling of whale distribution, vessel strike risk reduction, on-demand fishing gear and enforcement efforts.
