On November 22, 2024, DOE announced that it awarded $50 million in grants to five states through the Domestic Automotive Manufacturing Conversion Grant program. The funding will be used to upgrade vehicle manufacturing facilities to accommodate growing vehicle markets. Upgrades will support local manufacturing of electric, hybrid, and fuel cell vehicles. The five state recipients are Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Illinois.
The grants are funded by the Inflation Reduction Act. IRA sections 50142 and 50143 appropriated funds to DOE for projects to expand manufacturing of electric vehicles and other low or zero GHG emissions vehicles.
