DOE Announces $72.8 Million Loan Guarantee for Solar-Plus-Storage Microgrid on Tribal Lands

On September 13, 2024, DOE announced a $72.8 million loan guarantee for the Viejas (Baron Long) Group of Capitan Grande Band of Mission Indians of the Viejas Reservation to build a solar-plus-long-duration-energy-storage microgrid on the reservation. The project will provide reliable renewable energy to the reservation with a 15 MW photovoltaic solar generation system and a 70 MWh battery long-duration energy storage system. The developer, Indian Energy, is a Native-owned microgrid developer.

This loan guarantee is authorized by IRA section 50145, which is a tribal energy loan guarantee program to support energy resource development projects. This is the first loan guarantee to be closed under the program.
