On October 15, 2024, DOE announced a loan guarantee to fund the construction of two solar photovoltaic farms equipped with battery storage and two standalone battery energy storage systems in Puerto Rico. The facilities will help deliver clean, reliable, and affordable power to communities throughout Puerto Rico. The initiative will add up to 200 megawatts of solar generation and another 285 megawatts of reliable storage capacity to Puerto Rico’s electric grid. The projects will assist in the transition from coal energy infrastructure to clean energy facilities, contributing to the economic revitalization and health of energy communities by creating new job opportunities and lowering harmful emissions.
The project is financed by the Energy Reinvestment Program created by IRA section 50144, which provides loan guarantees for projects that retool, repower, repurpose, or replace energy infrastructure that has ceased operations, or enables existing energy infrastructure to avoid, reduce, utilize, or sequester air pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions.
