On November 19, 2024, DOE announced $16 million in grant opportunities “to research, develop, and acquire NRC certification for HALEU [high-assay low-enriched uranium] transportation packages focused on front-end transportation packaging needs to support a sustainable supply chain.” The purpose of the grant is to ensure the availability of enriched uranium for domestic nuclear energy production. Individual grants will be between $500,000 and $6 million. Applications are due by January 21, 2025.
The grant is funded by IRA section 50173, which appropriated $700 million to DOE to increase the availability of high-assay low-enriched uranium for nuclear energy development.
