On February 12, 2025, following meetings between Secretary of Energy Chris Wright and Senator Steve Daines (R-MT), DOE restored a $1.44 billion loan guarantee to Montana Renewables for developing low-carbon sustainable aviation fuel from vegetable oils and grease. DOE’s Loan Program Office previously paused all disbursements, following directives from the Trump administration and criticism from GOP Congress members.
Sustainable aviation fuel grants are funded by IRA section 50141, authorizing DOE to make loan guarantees for energy efficient projects.
