On January 8, 2025, DOI announced $79.8 million in IRA funding ($121 million in total with Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funding) to assist Native American communities in reducing pollution and developing climate resilience. DOI approved grants for 96 tribes and 10 tribal organizations spearheading 124 projects. This investment aligns with the Biden administration’s Justice40 initiative, seeking to ensure that “40% of the overall benefits of certain federal investments flow to disadvantaged communities that are marginalized by underinvestment and overburdened by pollution.”
These grants were funded in large part by IRA section 80001, appropriating $235 million to the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) for projects furthering tribal climate resilience and adaptation. Funding is available until September 30, 2031.
