On October 31, 2024, DOI announced that it has awarded almost $82 million in water access grants to increase access to clean, safe drinking water in Tribal communities in the West. The grants will support 23 projects through the Tribal Domestic Water Supplies Program. The purpose of the program is to increase domestic water supplies for Tribal communities that do not have reliable access to such resources. 21 of the grants will go towards planning and design, and the other 2 will go towards construction.
The program is funded by IRA section 50231, which appropriated $550 million for water access grants to disadvantaged communities. The communities must be located within one of the designated 17 states and 4 territories.
