DOI Launches New Program with Funds to Electrify Tribal Communities

Date: 08/15/2023
Type: Implementation of IRA

On August 15, 2023, DOI announced the launch of a new Tribal Electrification Program with $72.5 million in initial funding appropriated by IRA section 80003 to help communities electrify homes. This is a part of the overall $150 million investment from the IRA to support the electrification of homes in Tribal communities. This program helps reach the goal of electrifying all homes in Indian Country with renewable energy sources through providing financial and technical assistance for tribes to: (1) connect homes to transmission and distribution systems powered by clean energy, (2) electrify unelectrified Tribal homes through zero-emissions energy systems, (3) transition electrified Tribal homes to zero-emissions energy systems; and (4) support associated home repairs and retrofitting necessary to install the zero-emissions energy systems. The Tribal Electrification Program will center collaborative and community-led planning and implementation to ensure Tribal Nations across the country have their specific energy and implementation needs met.
