Type: Implementation of IRA
On July 6, 2023, the EPA issued a proposal under IRA section 60113 authority to amend the GHG reporting requirements for emissions by the oil and gas sector. These requirements apply to petroleum and natural gas systems under the Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program. The revision is intended to improve the accuracy of reported emissions of some of the primary drivers of the climate crisis, including GHGs like methane. The amendments revise calculation methodologies and ensure the use of robust empirical data, incorporate new technologies such as remote sensing systems, and address gaps in the current regulatory framework, including coverage for large methane release events.
