EPA Requests Comments on Methane Emissions Reduction Program

Date: 11/04/2022
Type: Implementation of IRA

On November 4, 2022, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a Request for Information on implementation of the Methane Emission Reduction Program established under section 60133 of the IRA. That section appropriated $1.55 billion to EPA to provide financial and technical assistance for activities that reduce methane emissions from the oil and gas sector. The section also directed EPA to implement a methane waste emissions charge on methane emitted from certain oil and gas facilities.

In the Request for Information issued on November 4, EPA posed a series of questions relating to use of the appropriated funds and imposition of the methane waste emissions charge. EPA accepted responses through January 18, 2023.
