On March 20, 2026, the Department of the Interior issued a closeout memorandum following an audit of the Bureau of Reclamation’s canal improvements projects. The memorandum notes that four grants were made under IRA section 50232, one of which was completed and the other three of which will not proceed after the audit. There are different reasons why the three projects were terminated but were related, in part, to recipients’ uncertainty about the future of awarded IRA grants.
IRA section 50232 appropriated $25 million to be awarded to grantees for canal improvement projects. Nearly all appropriated funds had been awarded to grantees before the audit began.
