On November 1, 2024, NOAA announced that the Center for Collaborative Heat Monitoring is accepting applications for communities to receive grants and technical support to monitor and evaluate local heat risk. Community grantees will receive $10,000 to support community-led campaigns. Applications are due by January 17, 2025 at 11:59 EST. Communities are also invited to submit an optional Expression of Interest by November 15, 2024 and be paired with a “mentor” community to provide additional guidance.
The Center for Collaborative Heat Monitoring was created by NOAA and the National Integrated Heat Health Information System to address extreme heat risks using IRA funding. The center is “a unique partnership of science museums, researchers and technical experts” and has four regional hubs with which grantees will partner to “co-create heat monitoring campaigns tailored to their local priorities and strengths.”
IRA section 40004 appropriates $150 million to NOAA to support climate and weather research and forecasting projects, which includes extreme heat management and preparedness.
