On November 26, 2024, NOAA announced a $147.5 million investment in improving the agency’s science and management capabilities for NOAA fisheries. The funding will “enable NOAA to modernize its science enterprise, delivering critical information and tools to support decision-making and adaptation strategies for rapidly changing marine ecosystems.” The funding will be used for two primary purposes. $107.5 million will go towards enhanced science and data collection. Another $40 million will go towards the Climate, Ecosystems, and Fisheries Initiative to build climate-ready and resilient fisheries.
IRA section 40001 appropriated funds to NOAA to support climate resilience in coastal communities, including with respect to fisheries. IRA section 40004 appropriated funds to NOAA to advance climate and weather research.
