On September 27, 2024, NOAA announced that it would put $3.84 million of IRA funds towards research and climate resiliency projects in Alaska and the Arctic. Because communities in Alaska and the Arctic are already experiencing the harmful effects of climate change, this investment will provide tools and projects that are tailored to the needs of those communities. These projects include: (1) co-designing sea-ice prediction and modeling tools; (2) enhancing data access and management tools for climate resilience; (3) expanding capacity to address climate adaptation needs in Alaska; and (4) building climate-ready fisheries management.
IRA sections 40001 and 40004 appropriate funds to support a range of climate research and resilience activities, including weather research, conservation and protection of coastal and marine resources, and more.
