OnĀ November 17, 2022, the Department of the Interior (“DOI”) announced that it would host two virtual meetings at which Tribal leaders would have the opportunity to provide input on how DOI should implement certain programs established via the IRA. The announcement was made in a letter sent to Tribal leaders by DOI’s Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs. The letter notes that the IRA appropriates $385 million to the Bureau of Indian Affairs to support climate resilience and adaptation, fish habitat needs, and a new Tribal electrification program. The letter goes on to state: “[t]hese programs will be implemented over a few years, which may require that we consult with you at multiple decision points to ensure active coordination. Currently, we seek your input to inform early planning decisions.”
The letter invites Tribal leaders to participate in one of two virtual “consultation sessions,” scheduled for December 13, 2022 and December 15, 2022. In addition to participating in the consultation sessions, tribal leaders are also invited to submit written comments via email by January 17, 2023.
