Treasury Issues Guidance on Energy Efficient Home Credit

Date: 09/27/2023
Type: Implementation of IRA

On September 27, 2023, Treasury released guidance on the Energy Efficient Home Tax Credit, extended by IRA section 13304. The credit provides homebuilders up to $5,000 for installing energy efficiency upgrades when building new homes, or during reconstruction or rehabilitation. Contractors for multifamily units may receive the full $5,000 credit if workers are paid a prevailing wage. Credits range from $500 to $5,000, depending on if the home meets Energy Star or Zero Energy Ready Home program requirements. Certification in these programs accounts for the energy efficiency of appliances, lighting, insulation, and duct systems. It also assesses whether the home is prepared to accommodate heat pumps and EVs. Certification must be conducted by a third party.
