USPS Announces Electric Vehicle Purchases

Section 70002 of the IRA appropriated $3 billion to the U.S. Postal Service (“USPS”) to enable it to transition to a clean vehicle fleet. On December 20, 2022, the USPS announced that it would use the funds to acquire more battery electric vehicles. USPS intends to deploy at least 66,000 electric vehicles by 2028 and has committed to only purchasing battery electric vehicles beginning in 2026 through 2028. The new battery electric vehicles are expected to start servicing postal routes in late 2023. USPS intends to publish a draft Environmental Impact Statement that will assess the potential environmental impacts of vehicle purchase alternatives.
