On February 5, 2024, DOI announced $3 million in IRA funds to support Puerto Rico’s efforts to combat climate change. The funds include $2,750,000 for the U.S. Geological Survey to increase climate expertise and workforce capacity of Puerto Rico’s Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DNER) and $250,000 for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to continue implementation of the National Seed Strategy by funding seed collecting teams and investing in seed production in Puerto Rico. Section 50241 of the IRA appropriates to the DOI, through the Office of Insular Affairs, $15 million to provide technical assistance for climate change planning, mitigation, adaptation, and resilience in U.S. Insular Areas.
