On May 3, 2024, HUD announced the completion of its first grant transaction supporting climate resiliency and restoration projects in affordable housing. Through the Green and Resilient Retrofit Program (GRRP) and in collaboration with Wollaston Lutheran Church, $750,000 will be used to finance the replacement of natural gas heating and cooling with an efficient heat pump system in the Bauer House apartment community in Quincy, Massachusetts. HUD provides rental assistance under the Section 202 Supportive Housing for Low-Income Elderly program to 74 of the property households. GRRP is funded through section 30002 of the IRA, “Improving Energy Efficiency or Water Efficiency or Climate resilience of Affordable Housing,” which authorizes HUD to take a number of actions to improve the climate resiliency of eligible properties.
