On September 27, 2024, HUD announced the release of two new resources to assist with retrofitting and weatherizing affordable homes. First, HUD published a new Build for the Future Retrofit Guide to “leverage funds from [the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the IRA] to preserve affordable housing, protect residents from climate hazards, and bring down housing and energy costs for American families.” Second, HUD updated the Funding Navigator, which helps potential grantees identify and access funding opportunities under the IRA and Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to build resilient housing. The updates simplify search fields, prioritize funding opportunities, and clarify and streamline applications.
HUD programs related to retrofitting and weatherization are funded by both the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and IRA section 30002, which appropriated funding for energy/water efficiency and climate resilience projects and has led to programs such as the Green and Resilient Retrofit Program.
