Type: Implementation of IRA
On May 6, 2024, NOAA broke ground on the future home of the NOAA Marine Operations Center-Atlantic, a new facility on Naval Station Newport in Rhode Island. The U.S. Navy awarded $146,778,932 to Skanska USA to build the new NOAA facility in December 2023 using IRA funds. The facility will be LEED certified and will eventually be the homeport for a new, lower-emission NOAA vessel. Section 40002 of the IRA appropriates $150 million to NOAA for the construction of new and replacement of existing piers, marine operations facilities, and fisheries laboratories and an additional $50 million for the construction of facilities to support the National Marine Sanctuary System.
